Strongly influenced by Mr Behan’s obsession with this year’s BBC’s ‘Springwatch’ series, Year 6 have been setting up camp in their gardens and areas of local beauty to observe all things ornithological.
Children made use of tally charts to collect quantitative data on the distribution and abundance of bird species within their local areas. From the humble Wood Pigeon to the dreaded Heron, a variety of different species were logged by all, and discussions quickly led to what we can do to increase the biodiversity of birds visiting various areas of study.
A number of creative ideas were suggested; inclusive of constructing species-specific bird boxes, providing the birds with an array of foods (e.g. seeds, mealworms and suet) and even preventing our feline friends from roaming during certain periods of the day!
If you would like to get involved with any of these tasks then please see the attached ‘Counting Chart’, alongside the RSPB’s very own ‘edible pictures activity’ for some creative fun.
For those of you who missed any of this year’s ‘Springwatch’, the series can now be streamed from BBC iplayer.
