Parent Maths Challenge

Another classic maths problem this week:

In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?

The solution to last week’s Parent Challenge

Last week’s problem was:

A bat and ball cost $1.10.

The bat costs one dollar more than the ball.

How much does the ball cost?

Solution: Many people tend to assume that the ball costs 10 cents. While this response seems intuitive, it is actually incorrect. If the ball were 10 cents and the bat $1.00 more than the ball, the bat would cost $1.10, making the total $1.20. The correct solution is that the ball costs 5 cents, and the bat, being $1.00 more, costs $1.05, resulting in a total of $1.10.
