House Poetry is my favourite competition and it is no surprise that this year, the final was as exciting as ever!
A recent survey of almost 5,000 children in England found that those who read, watch or listen to poetry identified huge benefits for their well being, confidence, aptitude for learning and empathy. So it’s official! Reading poetry is not only fun – it is good for you too! Every year children all over the country celebrate National Poetry Day by writing their own poems. Poetry is a great way to express your thoughts and feelings on different subjects. Poetry can be funny, sad and moving or tell an exciting story – and it doesn’t have to rhyme.
All children from Year 3 to Year 8 wrote a poem in class on the theme of ‘Journeys’. Their class teachers chose one finalist from each year group and House and then our judge, Mr Towers, had the very difficult task of choosing the winners.
Year 1 and Year 2 children also wrote some fantastic class poems which they read aloud to us.
Mrs Mason said:
I was so proud of all the children for writing such fantastic poems. We really enjoyed reading them all – and it was so difficult to choose just one finalist from each House. I was also so impressed by the confident way the children read their poems aloud in front of the whole school.’
The winning house was… McCORMACK
