Throughout Pre-Prep and Prep, our art department inspires the children in ever more impressive levels of creativity. We are proud to announce our two Year 8 Art Captains, Luke and Bo and we look forward to their contributions towards this vibrant department.
Mrs Wheeler summarises a few recent projects below.
As part of our portrait project in Year 8, our Art Captain, Luke sketched the proportions of the face and then sculpted a mini head from terracotta clay. Luke has a passion for sculpting in clay, particularly male portraits. I’m looking forward to what he will create next!
Following their clay sculpted heads, Year 8 children are now studying the Easter Island Heads and have constructed models from recycled milk bottles and masking tape. This week they started to papier mache the heads to paint in a stone affect. They have enjoyed the project so far and it has given them an idea of how their final sculptures may look.
At the beginning of the year, the art department began working with Years 1 and 2. They have been getting used to coming down to the the art room and working with me. We started the year looking at seasonal sunflowers which also fitted nicely with their curriculum topic of growing and plants. We began the year sketching the sunflowers in their sketch books, pastel studies and tissue paper collages which the year groups have beautifully displayed in their classrooms.
We moved onto looking at how van Gogh painted his sunflowers and some of his other paintings. Both Years 1 and 2 thoroughly enjoyed getting messy using their hands and fingers to paint sunflowers and dahlias in jugs. I absolutely love the abstractness of these paintings.
We have put the final touches on the totem pole which was carved in the summer of 2023 by the then Year 8’s and painted the following year by the next cohort at the top of the school. The project was completed by the summer art club and the art enrichment group during this half of term. We are looking forward to it being installed next term in the school grounds.
Years 1 and 2 have been creating mini pumpkins modelled with clay and then painted. The children have really enjoyed working with clay.
