As life starts to return to normal why not consider getting a local library membership? There are libraries all around the area including Guildford, Godalming, Cranleigh, Bramley, Haslemere, Ash, Bordon and Farnham. It’s very easy to get your child a free membership card to the local library where they may access an ever changing array of hundreds of fantastic books for all ages and you’ll have a new supply of free books to choose from weekly.
The beauty of a library is that you are able to let your children choose freely what they want to read without worrying about the cost. Use the opportunity to help them develop their own interests and chose a wide and varied range of book or ask the librarian for pointers, they are full of great advice and recommendations. Public libraries allow you to take up to 16 books at a time and renew as often as you like every three weeks (or until someone else requests that book).
Your library may also host Story Time sessions for the younger children, where they (and you!) will be able to have fun and meet other families. Also keep an eye out for special author events at the library or local bookshops – children love meeting their favourite authors.
Remember that we have two separate, dedicated libraries at Barrow Hills too; one aimed at Years 3-8 and one for the Pre-Prep children, as well as a good selection of books in the Junior Prep Department too. There is always someone who is happy to help your child make a selection or point them towards books they may enjoy if they need it.
One final tip is to give books as birthday presents, the other parents will love you (better than more plastic tat!) and then encourage your children and their friends to swap books with each other – it will give them a chance to read new stories, and might even get them all talking about what they’re reading.
Happy Easter – and remember the English Department are encouraging 10 minutes reading aloud each day for your child.
