Dear Parents,
The half-term finished with a celebration and our House Poetry Competition. The standard of English across all year groups was impressive, making for some tough judging calls. All the finalists, in each House and each year group from Year 3 upwards, got to recite their powerful compositions to the School. Years 1 and 2 warmed up by creating and performing a class poem.
We are following up with our sponsored read, and you can find details below. We would love the children to give this a go over half-term. When my own two children were growing up, the deal was unlimited credit at the bookshop; the small print (pardon the pun) was one book at a time, and they had to finish each one. I would get a book at the same time, signalling that Dad reads books too.
Elsewhere, the Girls’ U11 Hockey team enjoyed a strong competition at the IAPS event at Framlingham. This included a hotel sleepover to prepare for an early start, and notably, the girls displayed excellent behaviour and good manners – they were great ambassadors for us.
In sport, a special mention goes to James P and James H in Year 6, who have been selected for the national ‘Prep School Lions’ football squad. In addition to high-level fixtures, these young sports stars will be attending training camps during the holidays ahead of the Gothia Youth World Cup.
We finished the week with the Vice President and representative of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Peter Estlin, along with the Mayors of Waverley and Godalming, supporting our Year 7 children as they were admitted as members of Bridewell Royal Hospital. It was a lovely ceremony and celebration, taking us back to Bridewell’s foundation by King Edward VI in 1553.
A big thank you to the BHCC Dads who gathered on Sunday to get ahead and build the bonfire. Some great engineering minds have ensured it will go up with gusto on the night! The date is set, Friday 8th November, tickets via Classlist.
I hope families enjoy the break.

Dear Parents,
It has been an incredibly busy half term in Upper Prep and I am sure that everyone will be looking forward to a well earned rest. As usual, the children in Year 7 and 8 have tackled all activities with energy and enthusiasm.
The week began and ended with our House Poetry final and I was especially proud of George and Delilah who introduced this exciting event. Mrs Dudley and I are also delighted to announce that the Upper Prep children have now completed their ‘Track my Read’ Challenge, reading 25,000 minutes since the beginning of term! This is a remarkable achievement and Mrs Dudley and I are already planning their reward. Well done to everyone in Year 7 and Year 8 for reading so regularly at home and in school. Please keep this up over half term.
Year 7 enjoyed participating in the Bridewell Admissions Day on Friday which welcomed all children to the Bridewell Royal Hospital Foundation. The morning commenced with a chapel service at 10.30am in the presence of Alderman Sir Peter Estlin, who represents our historic links with the City of London. It was a beautiful service. Thank you parents who came to support us.
The cast of ‘Lord of the Flies’ are coming into school on Wednesday 30th October for an all day rehearsal. Thank you everyone – Mr O’Kelly and I are so impressed with your dedication, enthusiasm and commitment. Please look out for our posters around the school.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a peaceful and relaxing half term.
Mrs Mason
Dear Parents,
It’s been another busy and eventful week at school, with a fantastic mix of learning, fun, and some impressive sporting achievements!
Halloween festivities have been in full swing throughout the week, bringing plenty of spooky fun into the school. In food tech, the children got creative in the kitchen, making delicious chocolate mummy apples. The mix of Halloween fun and culinary skill was a hit with the children, and their creations looked (and tasted!) fantastic.
On Tuesday, Year 6 had the exciting opportunity of take part in a STEM careers workshop. The children were introduced to various STEM-related fields, and explored the possibilities for their future careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
As the term progresses, I have been looking through reports and reading the form teachers’ comments. It is so pleasing to see how well the children have settled into the new school year. They’ve shown great focus and adaptability, and I am very proud of their hard work so far. Please take note of any targets for improvement highlighted in their reports, as these are important areas where we can support their ongoing growth and development.
Thank you for your continued support. I hope you have a lovely half-term break, and I look forward to seeing everyone when we return in November!
Kind regards,
Miss Tyrrell
Dear Parents,
As we’ve geared up to half term and embraced autumn, Pre-Prep Assembly on Tuesday focused on a seasonal favourite of the children; Hallowe’en. We explored where the celebration of Hallowe’en comes from and heard about some of the traditions which take place around the world. The Pre-Prep children were very keen to share what they are planning to dress up as later this month. Madame Early’s French lessons also embraced this spooky theme when she arrived for Pre-Prep lessons with her witch’s hat and her greeting of “Joyeux Halloween!” Mrs Wheeler has used Hallowe’en pumpkins as the focus in recent art lessons in Year 1 and Year 2 as the children made clay pumpkins which they then went on to decorate and paint in warm autumnal colours. Some of you may have noticed these proudly displayed above the wood burner by Mrs Hubble’s desk this week.
Autumn half term is our annual Open Classroom event and it was a real treat for our children to welcome their families into their classrooms this afternoon. They were able to show parents some of their hard work this term including displays and a look in some of our older Pre-Prep pupils’ exercise books. It was a lovely way to round off a busy first chapter of the academic year.
Well done to this week’s Work of the Week recipients; to Luca (Rec), Austin (1G) and Ben (2G). We were also able to congratulate those children who achieved the first bronze awards of the year for House point collection: Beau, Freddie, Hugo, Matilda, George W and Walter. Otis (2G) proudly received the half termly Pre-Prep Playtime Award. A huge congratulations to all of these children.
Wishing you all a really lovely half term break.
Mrs Barnett
