Last week, Reception embarked on an exciting journey into the world of snails. The book of the week was ‘The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson and the children loved following the tiny snail on its big adventure with the whale. To deepen their understanding, we read several non-fiction books about snails. The children were fascinated to learn more about where snails live, what they eat and how they grow. These books helped us answer many curious questions. Did you know…
- Snails carry their homes on their backs. Their shells are made of a strong material called calcium
- They move very slowly, leaving a shiny trail behind them
- Snails have a special body part called a ‘foot’ which helps them glide smoothly
- They use their tentacles to see and feel the world around them
The children made their own snails by manipulating clay until it was soft enough to roll into long sausage shapes. They carefully turned them into spirals and used pipe cleaners for the tentacles. Once the clay dried the children let their creativity run free as they used the acrylic paints to create some very colourful snails. Well done reception
