On Monday 10th June, Barrow Hills School will take part in their annual ‘Energy Free Day’ across the entire school. The day will be a normal school day without electronics, lights will be turned off when and where possible and learning will be taken outside if the weather allows.
This activity hopes to draw our children’s attention to the plethora of items they use that require energy. Lights, calculators, computers, Chromebooks, interactive whiteboards and air conditioners are all out for the day. While this sustainability activity is definitely a challenging one, it will also help our school community to see just how many energy-consuming products are left on in classrooms unnecessarily.
For our parent community we would love you to extend this into your homes if possible. The Eco team have listed some tips that you can action at home….
Stop the frost. Defrost your fridge freezer regularly to prevent it from using more energy than needed.
Use smaller pans. The smaller your pan, the less heat you’ll need. Using the right size pan for your meal means less energy wasted.
Switch to an energy-efficient showerhead. An energy-efficient shower head could reduce the amount of water you use.
Change your light bulbs. Fitting LED bulbs is a great way to reduce energy use at home.
Switch off the lights. Every time you leave a room, switch the lights off.
