Children in Year 1 have been excited to start work on our new topic of ‘Coastlines and Islands’. We have talked about islands and considered some of their geographical features. The children then discussed the features of the islands typically found on pirate maps, and had great fun making their own maps and ‘ageing’ them with cold tea.
The children also painted some lovely seascapes, in the style of Van Gogh. We looked at Van Gogh’s work, particularly his painting ‘The Sea at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer’, and considered how Van Gogh made the sea almost appear to move through his use of bold colours and short brush strokes.
What a super start to the topic – well done Year 1!
