As there are a number of children at Barrow Hills with a diagnosis of dyslexia or a tendency towards a dyslexic profile, it seemed like a good idea to introduce you to a brilliant range of dyslexia friendly books, many of which we have available to borrow in the library, from a publisher called Barrington Stoke – a small, independent and award-winning children’s publisher for over 20 years.
Barrington Stoke publishes a range of books especially designed to help children with dyslexia to enjoy reading. The aim is to create accessible, enjoyable and unpatronising short books for children who are dyslexic, struggling to read, or simply reluctant to sit down with a book. From the specially designed font to the colour of the paper, there are some brilliantly engaging stories from some of our best contemporary authors from Michael Morpugo and Malory Blackman, to Frank Cotterell Boyce and Julia Donaldson.
Each book is carefully edited to ensure that there are no unnecessary words to hinder comprehension whilst still making the story engaging. Illustrations are used to break up the text and keep the story moving, and the content is short, sharp and unpatronising, aimed at the actual age of the reader, rather than their reading age.
By following this link, you can download sample pages of a range of their books by reading age and by interest age, to help decide what level might suit your child best. Once you know this information we can direct them to the most appropriate books that we have in the school library at that level, or we can bring in more titles if necessary. Feel free to contact Mrs Goedkoop or me for assistance.
