Last Friday, the Year 7 pupils enjoyed a visit to Battle Abbey to discover more about the events leading up to and during the Battle of Hastings To start the visit, they first participated in a fun interactive role play session, which involved wearing costumes and wielding Saxon and Norman swords, spears and axes, whilst learning many new weird and wonderful facts and stories about the events of 1066.
The discovery tour concluded with a reenactment of the Battle of Hastings. They learnt about the war cries of the two sides and the events and stages of this most famous battle, including discussing the key turning points and how the day was won. A stone marked the place where the last Saxon king of England, Harold II was struck down, at the conclusion of the battle.
The pupils visited the museum which contained a number of interactive displays, including examples of the armour and weapons and watched a narration of the battle. The day concluded with a walk of the battle site and an opportunity to climb to the roof of the abbey. From the top of the abbey, there were stunning views of the town and surrounding countryside.
What an amazing trip which was enjoyed by everyone. We would highly recommend a visit to Battle Abbey for anyone interested in this momentous day in English history.
